Unflattering HR image

Several recent polls (e.g. PricewaterhouseCoopers, Globoforce and activ8 intelligence) again reflect an unflattering HR image. An alarming number of CEOs and (top) managers state that the HR-department scores badly when it comes to recruiting and retaining talent and falls grossly short as a strategic business partner. They also see the HR-position as playing only a minor role in the organisation and consider it to be bureaucratic.

A short while ago Albert Martens, Ikea’s Global HR Project Manager, stated that HR is too internally focused. Consequently, he believes it contributes very little towards the company’s end result.

Do you agree with this diagnosis and thesis? Why do you/don’t you?

    I agree with the thesis above. I have an IT background and I’m very interested in HRM but what i’ve noticed is that the HR-department can contribute a lot more to the end result of the company. They can improve on employer branding, great place to work,…I have always the feeling (most) HR-people think that they have the knowledge and stay on their island without looking to the outside world.
